The planners originally envisaged rehabbing the array of culverts in the embankment carrying the railway over the valley of the Westenbrunnenbach river by laying precast reinforced-concrete pipes inside the old cross-sections and filling the cavities round the pipes with compacted sand. The specialist company that contracted for the work proposed an in-situ concreting solution instead. Doka then modified its Box Culvert system, which is designed for the cut-and-cover method, so that it could be used for single-sided forming and concreting. The system, which can use either Large-area formwork Top 50 or Framed formwork Framax Xlife, has the advantage that the culvert walls and top slab can be cast monolithically (fresh concrete pressure 50 kN/m²).
