Redevelopment of Rotterdam´s historic post office building on the Coolsingel
In Rotterdam, the historic post office building on Coolsingel is being extensively redeveloped. The project, called 'POST', aims to transform the once derelict building into a multifunctional complex featuring a hotel, luxury flats, high-end restaurants, various retail outlets and public passageways. This ambitious project is in line with Rotterdam's vision of a greener, more accessible city centre and aims to revitalise this architectural icon and turn it into a vibrant place for residents and tourists. To ensure a high-quality construction process, the Post Bouw JV (a joint venture of Besix and Rizzani de Eccher) has chosen Doka as its formwork and scaffolding supplier.
Buildingtype
Multipurpose building
Challenge
Complexity of the arched façade
Limited, tight space on site
Limited tower crane availability
Complex building geometry, e.g. wall jumps
Consideration of temporary system loads in the building statics
Solution
Protection Screen with telescopic platforms to ensure accessibility for façade installation
Construction site logistics combined with technical solution
Combination of self-climbing systems to cope with structural changes e.g.wall jumps
Special SCP platform solution to transfer loads from the concrete placing boom to the strong walls
At the Post Rotterdam location, the need for storage at the climbing platform led to the choice of a building´s core hybrid system, with Platform SCP inside and SKE50+ outside. The Platform SCP, fully enclosed for safe working at great heights, lifts all site equipment seamlessly in one craneless operation while SKE's modular design provides an efficient solution for any structure, supporting fast and safe repositioning processes with its fully hydraulic equipment.
One specific customer demand was to decrease the crane capacity needed. Consequently, the concrete placing boom utilises the SCP system to climb and fulfils the crane requirement with just one instead of two cranes. The columns were designed with DokaXlight to facilitate pouring the floor and columns simultaneously. Given the varied openings in the floor, changing in height from one to three floors, ringlock scaffolding was employed. Dokadek 30 and Dokaflex beamless handset system, for speed on site, was selected for the slabs. The Protection Screen Xclimb 60 envelops the building, with an additional screen for the assembly of the façade.
"As formwork supplier, we are playing an important role in this major construction project in Rotterdam. In addition to providing wall and slab formwork, we are also carrying out complex hydraulic climbing operations. The biggest challenge is the limited construction area, but we still have to ensure precise construction and safety on site. A particularly exciting moment was the assembly of a large steel frame at considerable heights in several stages".
