New Polyclinic Hospital

Milan, Italy

Urban anchor and point of reference for health

The expansion of the Milan Polyclinic represents a new urban anchor destined to become the driving force behind the redevelopment of the neighborhood.

Architecturally, the new extension consists of two linear bodies of eight floors (120 meters long), connected by a central body of four floors (18 meters high); to these have been added two underground floors, with parking for 500 cars and the possibility of using the entire underground area for the management of large-scale health emergencies.

The entire structure has been built with innovative earthquake-resistant technology and materials with reduced environmental impact (CAM materials make up 50 percent of the total). The Central Body guests 21 operating rooms as well as the facilities and services for the entire Hospital; here, in the basement floors, the impressive machines of Radiology and Neuroradiology are housed. Another distinctive feature of the project that reinforces the openness to the city and the urban regeneration role of the new facility: the roof of the Central Body is completely occupied by the elevated Therapeutic Garden (of 7000 square meters).

Little space, lots of work: challenge won by Doka Loading Platforms

The Polyclinic construction site is a major engineering feat, especially in terms of logistics management: in fact, the construction site area covers 23,000 square meters, with no additional space available for storing materials, provisional structures and construction equipment. The Doka loading platforms, which are used as a storage surface for materials and equipment, have made a key contribution to this.

In fact, the location of the construction site, in the Milan city centre, highlights the critical operational issues related to the continuous updates of the logistics and location of material storage in relation to the progress of the construction site itself. In such a complex project, moreover, safety is a foundational aspect, and Doka, in this regard as well, has proven to be a reliable and high-profile partner.

Safety, quality and collaboration

The Xsafe Z edge protection screens allowed for complete freedom of work on the slabs with significant positive effects on productivity compared to traditional solutions, while the Freefalcon fall arrest system proved essential where site geometries required personal protective equipment that would not inhibit operator movement.

From the point of view of provisional structures, the site planning called for one slab of both inpatient facilities per month, so about 3,000 square meters. This entailed a minimum floor formwork allocation of more than 6,000 sq m: in this case, the Dokadek 30 formwork was used, to the great satisfaction of the client, which allowed for a marked acceleration in casting times.

In addition to the slab formwork, Doka supplied the necessary solutions for making the elevation elements, namely the Doka Framax Xlife wall formwork, to which was added, of course, all the accessories and a really important supply of drop-head props.
